It was only fitting that Kodiak swimming’s four seniors ended their final meet at the Kodiak Community Swimming Pool on the same relay team.

Jackson Krug, Max Jensen, Nick Carver and Ian Rocheleau capped a two-meet sweep of Eagle River on Saturday by cruising to a winning time of 3 minutes, 29.10 seconds in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

“It was awesome. It was one of the last times that all of us will get to swim with each other in that kind of a relay,” Carver said.

With only four seniors in the program, it was easy for Kodiak coach Maggie Rocheleau to make the 400 relay a special moment for her boys. They cheered each leg of the relay.

“It has been really special to watch their friendship and to watch camaraderie in the pool. It really is a band of brothers. They love each other like brothers … and make each other better,” the coach said.

The four seniors have Kodiak floating to the top of the state and, a week after dominating the Bartlett/Chugiak Invitational plowed through Eagle River. Krug, Rocheleau and Carver combined to win eight individual events against the Wolves, as Kodiak won 87-73 on Friday and 81-77 on Saturday.

“It is super sad that I know I probably won’t get to swim with any of these guys ever again,” Krug said. “But, I get to cherish the moments I have with them up until state and just go out with a bang.”

Carver said setting a few personal-best swims made the exhausting week worth it.

“I put a lot of effort in this week because I knew it was going to be my last meet here,” Carver said.

Rocheleau said many personal-best swims were recorded, including freshman Lia Jones chipping off eight seconds to go 59.96 in winning Saturday’s 100 freestyle.

“That is such a huge accomplishment when you hit those barriers,” the coach said. “It is such a confidence booster.”

Alison Narog won the 500 freestyle to pick up the only other individual victory for the Kodiak girls. A talented Eagle River squad took Friday’s meet 66-46 and Saturday’s meet 84-42.

“It’s great to have that competition,” Maggie Rocheleau said. “Their coaches are doing fabulous work … we appreciate them coming down.”

Kodiak competes at the Palmer Invitational Friday and Saturday.
