Kodiak’s defense committed six errors as the Bears lost for the third straight day, this time falling 14-6 to High Tech SD in a 2A pool play game at the Mike Morrow Invitational Baseball Tournament in San Diego, Calif., Wednesday.
“Our guys just have to play better defense,” Kodiak coach Rick Langfitt said. “Our pitchers pitch to contact, and when they hit the ball we either can’t make the play or are in the wrong position. I still feel that we have the talent and have the parts. We just need to consistently play defense.”
High Tech SD led 10-0 after the fifth inning. Kodiak scored four in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 10-4. However, High Tech scored four more in the sixth.
Alec Eastman collected two of Kodiak’s four hits — all singles. Austin Frick had an RBI single, while Brandon Mahle had the Bears’ other hit. Senior David Sweeney scored a pair of runs for Kodiak.
Kodiak faced High Tech’s ace pitcher, who struck out 10 in six innings. Eddie Arellano Jr. started for Kodiak and struck out four in four innings.
Before the game, Kodiak worked out at Southwestern College, which led to a bunch of sore arms for the game.
“The experience at Southwestern College was worth the whole cost of the trip,” Langfitt said.
Even though Kodiak went 0-3 in pool play, the Bears will play in a consolation game against Whittell, Nev., this morning at 9.
Kodiak’s athletes are also attending tonight’s San Diego Padres game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
