Last season, Jaymi Bethea ran away with the female title of the Kodiak Invincible Pentathlon.

This season was just a bit different.

Bethea staged a come-from-behind victory in the final event — the 800 meters — to claim her second straight pentathlon title on Saturday at Joe Floyd Track and Field.

Bethea finished five points ahead of sophomore McKenzie Barnett to win with 2,648 points — 291 fewer points than last year.

Barnett gained an early lead by winning Thursday’s high jump event, clearing 4 feet, 6 inches. She kept her lead going into Saturday’s final event.

Barnett started 12 seconds ahead of Bethea, but Bethea, Kodiak’s 800 girls record holder, passed Barnett with 10 meters left to secure the victory with a time of 2 minutes, 25.5 seconds.

Samantha Oliver won the 100 (14.75) and the shot put (32-6) and Sarah Ng captured the 300 hurdles (54.18).

Junior Jordan Fogle took the boys’ title for the second consecutive year with 2,890 points, 296 points ahead of runner-up finisher Caleb Nymeyer.

Fogle won the 800 (2:11.5) and the 300 hurdles (45.63). Gage Cubbedge won the 100 (12.23), Mua Sega took the shot put (37-4) and Nymeyer won the high jump (5-02).

On Friday, Kodiak opens its season at the Big C Relays at the Anchorage Sports Dome.
