Shooting

Erik Berggren locks into his target during a Benchrest Rimfire Rifle Competition in 2020 at the Salonie Creek Rifle Range.

As the deer season opened in Kodiak, six marksmen opted to take part in the fourth rimfire match of the season Sunday at Salonie Creek Rifle Range.

Three points in the standings separated the six shooters.

“The fog didn’t dampen any spirits or scores and the light wind added to the close spread of point totals that separated all the contestants,” organizer and shooter Mike Kerwood wrote in an email.

Erik Berggren, Kerwood and Velma Vining all shot a perfect 400. Bergreen gained the crown with 35 bullseyes — two more than Kerwood and three more than Vining.

Bob White placed fourth (399, 30 bullseyes), Ryan Kitka was fifth (398, 27) and Andy Finke was sixth (397, 26).

Deer season also started Sunday. Kerwood said that rifle practice — or attending Sunday shoots — aids in quality hunts.

“Only a practices marksman (or markswoman) is capable of making the difficult or long shot,” he wrote.
