Kodiak’s Joren Valdez runs the ball during a high school football game against Wasilla in August at Joe Floyd Track and Field.

Kodiak’s first-ever football game in the Railbelt Conference will have to wait for another week.

According to Debbie Rohrer, the Kodiak Island Borough School District activities director, the Bears’ Railbelt opener against North Pole on Friday at Joe Floyd Track and Field has been canceled because of positive COVID-19 tests director.

Rohrer said multiple positive tests and close contacts to positive cases on Kodiak’s team forced the cancellation. She doubted the conference game would be rescheduled.

“There really isn’t room in the schedule to reschedule,” Rohrer wrote in a text message.

Kodiak (0-3) was off last week and finishes the regular season with conference games at Lathrop (Sept. 18) and at West Valley (Sept. 24), and a non-conference home  game against Kenai (Oct. 1).

This is the first time this fall that a Kodiak High team canceled a game because of COVID. Not so for North Pole. The Patriots’ game last week against Lathrop was postponed because of COVID.

After spending 17 seasons in the Northern Lights Conference, the Alaska Schools Activities Association moved Kodiak to the Railbelt Conference with Lathrop, North Pole and West Valley.
