With the high school baseball season finished, American Legion baseball takes over.

Alaska’s summer season for 13 to 19 year olds officially started over Memorial Day weekend but began in earnest on Monday.

For the second straight summer, Kodiak Post 17 will not be part of the league. According to coaches, there were not enough committed players to field a team to compete at the AA level. The last year Post 17 played was in 2019

There will be a few Kodiak connections in the 15-team league. Jace Crall, who recently helped Kodiak High to a runner-up finish at the Division II State Championships will be playing for the Wasilla Post 35 Road Warriors.. Crall’s father is retiring from the Coast Guard, and the family is relocating to the Mat-Su Valley.

Former Kodiak High and Post 17 catcher Nathan James has joined the Kenai Post 20 Twins coaching staff.

James was an integral piece of Post 17’s historic upset of top-seeded Juneau in the opening round of the 2018 American Legion State Championships.

Legion baseball is split into two divisions. Dimond, Palmer, Chugiak, Bartlett, Juneau, North Pole and South are housed in the American Division. Service, East, Eagle River, West, Fairbanks, Kenai, Ketchikan and Wasilla make up the National Division.

The top eight teams qualify for the state tournament June 22-27 at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.
