To the editor: My wife Julie and I want to offer our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the captain and the crew members who were lost on the Scandies Rose. We lift up their memories and give thanks for the two crew members who survived.
I recently received a briefing from the Coast Guard on the sinking of Scandies Rose, and the great lengths our heroic Coast Guard rescuers went to save lives on that horrible night. The Coast Guard will hold hearings and make its final report on this tragedy public.
Saving Americans on our seas is what the Coast Guard does, and it’s why we in Alaska value them so much. I want our Coast Guard and all of Kodiak to know that as chair of the subcommittee in charge of the Coast Guard, I’ve had the honor to work with the Coast Guard to bolster its ships and aircraft throughout our state, including in Kodiak, so that the Coast Guard can undertake such critical missions more safely and quickly.
Finally, my staff and I have watched the way Kodiak has come together in the face of this tragedy, and it makes me so proud to represent such an incredibly supportive and caring community.
Thank you to the community of Kodiak, and our Coast Guard. Please know that my door is always open.
