Alex Appel

Alex Appel

Alex Appel has joined the KDM news team as a reporter covering the City of Kodiak and fisheries. She will also be handling general assignments as needed.

She joins reporter Jack Barnwell, who covers the Kodiak Island Borough and school district, as well as general assignments.

Already, Appel has covered stories ranging from our rodeo preview and expectations for Astra’s recent rocket launch to much of our ongoing COVID coverage and the closing of Monk’s Rock Coffeehouse and Bookstore.

“Alex is off to a great start,” said Editor and Publisher Kevin Bumgarner. “I am encouraged by her natural curiosity and love for the island and its people. I also would like to say thanks to everyone who has welcomed her to Kodiak and taken her calls or answered her emails.”

Having come from New York, she’s excited to experience the Kodiak way of life.

“I’ve only been here for a short period of time, but I already know that this place is incredible,” Appel said. “Kodiakans are the nicest people in the world, and the island is beautiful.”

In June, Appel graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York. She majored in Russian and history and minored in biblical studies. While there, she was the Editor-in-Chief of the college newspaper, the Concordiensis, where she also had a beat: She says it was called “everything that moved.”

In addition to the school paper, Appel interned at a real estate magazine called “The Commercial Observer.”

During her free time, Appel likes hiking, cycling, crocheting and taking long walks on the beach.
