Raymond John Monigold

August 7, 1927 - March 10, 2021

Raymond J. Monigold, age 93, a long-time resident of Kodiak and beloved father and grandfather, passed away on March 10, 2021, after a brief illness.

Ray was born August 7, 1927, to the late Celesta (Andrews) and William A. Monigold Sr. in Steubenville, Ohio. He was the last surviving member of his family, which included six brothers — William Jr., Asa, Walter, George, Clarence and Harry — and two sisters — Celesta (Baker) and Mildred (Monroe). We always enjoyed listening to his many stories and fond memories of his childhood days in the eastern Ohio countryside.

In October of 1944, at the age of 17, Ray joined the U.S. Navy. After a short time in Hawaii, he was stationed in Guam before being transferred to the Kodiak Navy Base on June 6, 1946. It was here that he met Tina Chichenoff, who he married in 1952. Their first home was a little log cabin that sat on the hill above Mill Bay Beach. They shared 37 years together before her passing in 1989.

Ray worked various jobs around Kodiak, including the old Clark’s Garage, White Alice, helping to put in one of the first concrete sidewalks in town, Aleutian homes and the new school before going to work for the newly formed Alaska State Dept. of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator. He would plow the snow, grade the roads and fill the many potholes for nearly 30 years until his retirement in 1987.

Ray’s love for Kodiak was second to none. Nearly every weekend, would involve a ride “out the road” where he would enjoy the beauty of our island and its wildlife. Anybody who knew Ray also knew his love of the automobile. As his son once put it, “Some people take in stray animals, Dad takes in stray cars.” So true. He was a skillful mechanic and always willing to help others, which he was often asked to do.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife Tina, sons Raymond Jr. and Kenneth, stepdaughters Frances (Day) and Bonnie (Skog), and grandchildren Tara (Lamb-Murrow) and Kenneth (Day). He is survived by his daughter Theresa Wallace and son Ronald Monigold, long-time and dear friend Esther Denato, grandchildren Carla Schauff, Paula Mariscal, Lara Peterson, Carolyn Ames, Donna Joblonski, Janese Gould, Shar Goodman and Eddie Day, and many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

We thank you for your love, gentle nature, sense of humor, wise words and always the strong shoulder you offered to anyone who needed to lean on it. Rest in peace, Dad, you deserve it.

A celebration of Ray’s life and the love we were blessed with will be held later this summer.
