Obituary: Sean Hayes

July 20, 1982 — January 26, 2021

Kodiak, Alaska

Sean Hayes, accomplished traveler, adventurer, rebel and all-around badass, entered his eternal life on January 26, 2021.

Sean was born and raised on Kodiak Island, making sure every day was an adventure. Sean was the definition of a true Alaskan: pilot, fisherman, hunter, dedicated hard worker. He fished Kodiak and Bristol Bay. If he was on the ground, you would often find him either riding a motorcycle or working on one. He could literally fix anything. He purchased a failing motorcycle repair shop in Portland, Oregon, and ran it successfully for many years, until his interest broadened to include airplanes. He obtained his private, instrument, commercial, seaplane ratings, as well as taking aerobatics lessons. He worked pit crew for the Baja race team "Green Army," and eventually advanced to flying spotter plane for the Baja 500 and 1000 as well as other races. He continued fishing and tendering in Kodiak waters throughout his life.

Sean was a courageous, tough and intelligent soul. He lived life in the fast lane, yet always slowed down to help out those around him. He was dedicated to his people and always went out of his way to be kind and thoughtful to them. He was particularly thoughtful to his mom, always making sure everything was going good with her and inviting her along on the next adventure, as well as giving her flying lessons in his Cessna 170.

You could find Sean dressed in his own style (black), flying a plane, riding a motorcycle, or any other motorized vehicle that kept him lively.

Everyone who knew Sean knows he lived his life to the fullest. He had the biggest heart, best jokes and most contagious laugh. His relationships were admirable, and his values in life were countless.

Sean is survived by his mother Jo Murphy, stepfather Rolan Ruoss, father Carl Hayes, siblings Rhea Hayes and partner Kelvin Rueben (Sonny Hayes, Jonny Botz), Jamie Andrew (Niall, Nolan, Nathan) and Ryder Ruoss (partner Meika Wilde and daughter Coral), along with many other beloved family members and many close friends.

Please join us in celebrating Sean’s life at 5:00 p.m. on May 28, 2021, at Trident Basin (Sea Hawk Air). We will gather at 5:00, there will be a fly-by in his honor at 6:00 p.m. and a BBQ/bonfire to follow. Feel free to bring a dish to share.
