Kodiak tennis fans will have to play nice on the court for a week or two longer as work continues on upgrades and resurfacing projects at the city facility.

The two tennis courts at Baranof Park are undergoing repairs, repainting and resurfacing work. City crews are working on one court at a time, so players will have access to at least one open court while the other is under repair.

Work started about two weeks ago on the project but because Parks and Recreation Department crews also are responsible for digging burial sites in the city cemetery, the repair project has slowed as crews tend to burial duties.

“We’re hoping to finish by next week and get the other one done soon after,” said Corry Gronn, Parks and Rec interim department coordinator.

One of the tennis courts was originally a skate park, hence the need for repairs such as repainting and filling in holes, Gronn said.

With high school tennis season starting soon, the department is working to get both courts open as soon as possible.

“The one court is open and it’s free to everybody,” Gronn said.

The park is closed midnight to 6 a.m. daily.
