The Kodiak Police Department identified the man killed by a refrigeration leak as 30-year-old Cody Cecil of Everett, Washington.

“Police and rescue personnel responded to St. Herman’s Harbor, known as Dog Bay, for a report of a refrigeration leak. Cecil and one other crew member, identified as 56-year-old Francis Rutten of Snohomish, Washington, were transported to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center where Cecil was pronounced deceased. Rutten is currently being treated for exposure to Freon,” a statement by the Kodiak Police Department said.

Previously the police reported that five crewmembers were evacuated from the vessel on Wednesday morning

“The harbormaster personnel evacuated nearby vessels as a precaution due to the caustic nature of the chemicals involved,” a police statement said.

Jose Garcia, the chief on the Lady Alaska, a boat tied up nearby, said a friend of his was among the five crewmembers evacuated from the Alpine Cove. “[One of the crew on the Alpine Cove] said he woke up and his roommate on the bottom bunk was yelling in his sleep and vomiting on the floor,” Garcia said.

The incident is under investigation by the Kodiak Police Department and Marine Safety Detachment of the US Coast Guard, according to the press release.
