Kodiak’s track and field team will send 13 individuals and four relay squads to the state championship meet that begins Friday at Dimond High School in Anchorage.

“It is a good size group,” Kodiak coach Marcus Dunbar said. “We are going to be well represented.”

Leading the way is junior Levi Thomet, the defending state champion in the 1,600- and 3,200-meters.

He has the state-leading times in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 this season and is also a member of the state’s top 3,200 relay team.

Junior Levi Fried will look to defend his 800 state title from last year and will also run in the 1,600 and a pair of relays.

Kordell Pillans’ surprise performance at the Region III Championships landed him a spot at state in the shot put and the discus. Pillans’ shot put toss of 49 feet, 11.5 inches seeds him second, while teammate Leo Sega is seeded third with a mark of 48-05.5.

Kodiak is also sending Billy Alcaide (200), Andrew Caballa (400), Jeramiah Black (110 hurdles) and Christian Gutierrez (triple jump). The 400, 800 and 1,600 relay teams all qualified.

Kodiak’s boys are the defending state champions.

The Bears qualified five girls to the state meet.

Richelle Walker is the only one competing in two events, the shot put and the discus.

Zoe Bigley (1,600), Ranie Siscar (100 hurdles), Yuri Ahn (300 hurdles) and Barbara Sega (shot put) all qualified for one event.

Sega was an alternate and found out Tuesday that she made the cut.

“That was unexpected,” Dunbar said. “She is a newcomer and doesn’t have a whole lot of experience yet, so that was fantastic.”
