Kodiak High School’s boys soccer club finally took the pitch against another high school team Tuesday.

The Bears fell to Nikiski’s varsity squad, 2-1, and beat the Bulldogs’ junior varsity, 9-2, at Nikiski High School.

“They were ready to go,” Kodiak coach Eric Waltenbaugh said. “We had a little nerves going into it, but all those things go away with more experience and more games.”

Kodiak’s tied the game at 1 when Daniel Beltran scored on an assist from Jose Cortez around the 30th minute of the 60-minute match.

The Bulldogs grabbed the lead for good 15 minutes later.

“They were a pretty physical team and we learned that,” Waltenbaugh said. “It was a good matchup.”

Beltran, Cortez and Edwin Cruz all scored two goals against Nikiski’s junior varsity, while Isaac Cumplido and Sergio Gonalez each tallied one goal.

Between the two matches, Kodiak played 120 minutes of soccer.

“It was a good learning experience,” Waltenbaugh said. “It was a lot of fun.”

Waltenbaugh is hoping to host a match on May 12 against Homer. If that falls through, Kodiak’s next match will be on May 17 against Seward at Homer. Both the boys and girls will play the Seahawks.
