The Kodiak Emerging Small Schools basketball team made history on Wednesday morning.

The Ravens picked up the first regional win by an island co-op team with a 42-37 victory over Lumen Christi in a 1A Peninsula Conference Championship play-in game at Skyview High School in Soldotna.

“I never heard these kids talk so much; they were pretty excited,” Kodiak ESS coach Russ Scotter said.

Eighth-seeded ESS played top-seed Nikolaevsk late Wednesday night in the first-round of the double-elimination tournament. The winner advanced to a semifinal contest at 6:30 p.m. tonight, while the loser dropped to a loser-out game at noon.

Wade Bartelson led ESS with 12 points, while Cody Robustellini chipped in 11 points.

Tied at 25 at halftime, ESS built a 10-point lead midway through the fourth.

“They (the players) really went to work defensively and created some turnovers and controlled the game in the third quarter,” said Scotter, whose squad outscored Lumen Christi 10-5 in the third.

Lumen battled back and tied the game at 37 with 2 minutes left.

Brian Koozaata put ESS ahead for good with a bucket, which was followed by four Kodiak free throws to end the game.

Kodiak ESS (3-5) is comprised of 12 players from rural schools Port Lions, Akhiok, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie, Karluk and Larsen Bay. This is the second year the team has competed in the 1A Peninsula Conference.

Kodiak ESS also competes in mixed-six volleyball.
