Kodiak’s Dylan Anthony took top honors in the 10,000-meter run Friday at the Occidental Distance Carnival in California. 

Anthony, a freshman at the University of Alaska Anchorage, cruised to victory with a time of 30 minutes, 52.53 seconds, eight seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher. 

UAA teammate Jaymi Bethea, a 2011 KHS grad, placed 30th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:20.69 at the same meet. 

Bethea, a freshman, won the 1,600 4A state title for Kodiak last season.  

UAA’s next competition is March 30 at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore. 

In Oregon, Northwest Christian University’s James Osowski, a 2011 KHS grad, placed 12th in the 1,500 (4:17.35) at the Pacific University Preview Meet Saturday. 

On March 10, Port Lions 2011 grad Katie Strong placed second in the 5,000 meters (18:55.65) for Everett Community College (Wash.) at the PLU Invite in Tacoma, Wash. 

Also on March 10, Chico State University’s Miles Dunbar was sixth in the 3,000 (8:30.18) at the Aggie Open in California. 

Women’s basketball

Alysa Horn and her UAA Seawolves play Ashland University of Ohio in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight at 11:30 a.m. today in San Antonio, Texas. 

Ashland (30-1) is ranked No. 2 in the nation, while UAA (30-4) is No. 8. 

The winner advances to a 3 p.m. national semifinal game Wednesday.


Two Intercollegiate Horse Show Association competitions were held Feb. 26 at the University of Findlay (Ohio) with six schools participating: the University of Findlay, the University of Akron, Tiffin University, Oberlin College, Lake Erie College, Bowling Green State University and the College of Wooster.

The University of Findlay placed first in each show. Findlay’s Erin Blott, riding in Western Horsemanship, placed third in her class.
