For the first time in Grizzy Bowl history the traveling trophy is headed to the Mat-Su Valley.

Backed by a powerful running attack, Wasilla White ran over Kodiak’s Grizzly All-Star team 44-14 in the Grizzly Bowl at a drizzly Joe Floyd Track and Field Saturday.

This is Kodiak’s first loss in the third Grizzly Bowl — a game that pits Kodiak’s Grizzly All-Star team against the winner of the Mat-Su Valley Youth Football Association.

Wasilla went 8-1 in its league.

Wasilla’s no-huddle offense rushed for 376 yards and five touchdowns. Hunter Neauman led Wasilla with 194 yards and one score on 18 carries. He also added a seven-yard touchdown reception. Kyle Klein added 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

Turnovers plagued Kodiak in the early going. Kodiak fumbled on its second offensive play and eight plays later Klein put Wasilla ahead on a two-yard touchdown plunge just three minutes into the game.

Kodiak fumbled on a fake punt attempt on its second possession, which led to a 17-yard touchdown scamper from Blake Marks to put Wasilla ahead 14-0 midway through the first.

Wasilla scored again with less than two minutes left in the half when Klein ran in from three yards out. The two-point conversion was good to give Wasilla a 22-0 halftime lead.

Two plays after forcing a Wasilla turnover to begin the second half, Kodiak running back Jon LeVan found the end zone from 24 yards. Kerry Powers converted the two-point conversion on a run up the middle to cut the lead to 22-8.

Wasilla went four-and-out on its next drive. However, Kodiak’s eight-play drive stalled on an incomplete pass on fourth down at Wasilla’s 10-yard line.

Seven plays and 90 yards later, Neuman ran in from 11 yards out to increase the lead to 30-8 with 5:20 left in the third quarter.

Wasilla added a two more touchdowns before Kodiak’s Junior Rodriguez tiptoed down the right sideline for a 56-yard score.

Rodriguez ended with 86 rushing yards, while Powers led Kodiak with 95 yards rushing on 19 carries.
