For the first time, the Brian Young Invitational will be held away from The Rock.

The sixth installment of the high school all-star track and field meet takes place at West Anchorage High School. The two-day meet begins today at noon.

Kodiak will have eight athletes competing for the Southcentral All-Star team — Micah Bartel (100-meter run and 200), Connor Marbrey (800, 1,600 and 3,200), Yasuhiro Yamashita (shot put and discus), Jastine Asuncion (long jump), Ashleigh Nicholson (400), Hallee Blair (100 and 300 hurdles), Hannah Villaroya (100 and 300 hurdles) and Ahlissa Timu (shot put and discus).

The Brian Young Invite was created by longtime Kodiak coach Marcus Dunbar in 2013 to honor Brian Young, an avid Kodiak High School sports enthusiast who died in 2013 while climbing Denali.

The rising cost to put on the meet forced the meet to be moved to the mainland.

Athletes from Division I and Division II schools will be split into three all-star teams — Cook Inlet, North/Southeast and Southcentral.
