Kodiak’s trip to San Diego ended with a 5-3 loss to Whittell in a consolation game at the Mike Morrow Invitational Baseball Tournament Thursday morning.
The Bears went 0-4 in the four-day tournament.
“The 0-4 is not good, but the four game experience is very good,” Kodiak coach Rick Langfitt said.
All three Kodiak runs scored with two outs. The first two came in the first inning on an RBI double by Mikel Garner and a run-scoring single by Patrick Pickett.
The Bears increased their lead to 3-1 in the fourth with a Josh Bezona double that scored Pickett, who reached on a single.
Whittell, the defending 2A Nevada state champions, tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead with three in the fifth.
Brandon Mahle came in relief of reliever Alec Eastman in the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs and promptly walked in a run and then gave up a two-run single.
“We were trying to get out of the inning with Eastman,” Langfitt said.
Kodiak went down in order in the final three innings.
“Our biggest problem is that we are still making way too many mental errors,” Langfitt said. “The boys just have to realize that baseball is a mentally taxing game and they have to be in it at all times … These four games that we played are really going to prepare them for our season.”
Kodiak opens its Alaska season at home next Friday with a Southcentral Conference doubleheader against Houston, followed with another doubleheader against Soldotna on Saturday.
