Cross country win

A pair of Kodiak High School cross country runners cruised to victories at Monday’s Nikiski Class Races at Nikiski High School. 

Seniors Keith Osowski and Honey Rose Macatuno topped their respective races to give Kodiak its first victories of the 2016 season. 

Osowski earned the third victory of his career with a 5-kilometer time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds in the junior-senior race. He topped runner-up Jacob Davis of Homer by 46 seconds. 

The Bears placed five runners in the top 12 to claim the junior-senior boys’ team title. 

Jack Hannah was third (18:08), Anthony Maghupoy ninth (19:12), Brenden Thompson 10th (19:16) and Gabe Nummer 12th (20:00). 

Macatuno picked up her first career win with a 5K time of 22:10, 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Alex Moseley of Homer in the junior-senior field. 

Arielle Himelbloom was third (22:35).

The Kodiak girls claimed the freshmen-sophomore title with Carly Glover leading the way with a fourth-place finish with a time of 24:00. 

Maddie Christiansen was fifth (24:22), Katie Parnell eighth (27:30), Shalom Neff ninth (28:04), Naomi Daniher 12th (34:22) and Kayla Sanchez 15th (38:28). 

Seth Burnett paced the Kodiak boys with a fifth-place finish in the freshmen-sophomore race with a time of 20:09. 

Michael Bersin was sixth (20:19), Rafael Bitanga ninth (21:16), Paul Winegeart 11th (21:27), Rice Miller 13th (22:03), Youji Seto 16th (22:38), Josiah Overrbeek 22nd (25:54), Bradley Mitchell 23rd (25:57), Cole Scott 29th (30:14), Elbren Montoya 32nd (30:32), Solomon Himelbloom 33rd (31:45) and Caleb Griffin 34th (33:42). 

Kodiak remains on the Peninsula will compete at the Tsalteshi Invitational in Soldotna on Saturday.
