Kodiak’s boys basketball team snapped a 10-game losing skid against 4A competition with a 46-34 Northern Lights Conference victory Friday at Kenai.

Jemuel Mangalus erupted for 25 points to help the Bears end a drought that started at last year’s state tournament.

The Bears started this season 0-8 against 4A competition after ending last season with two losses at state.

Ending the streak didn’t come easy, though.

After Kenai had cut Kodiak’s lead to 30-29 midway through the fourth, Mangalus went to work.

Mangalus hit a layup, six foul shots and found Brian Caguing for a layup as Kodiak took a 43-32 lead with 1:08 to play. The senior scored 14 of his 25 points in the final quarter.

“We depend on him a lot,” Kodiak coach David Anderson told the Peninsula Clarion. “He’s a great free-throw shooter and he’s getting quicker with the ball.”

Billy Alcaide added 11 points.

Kenai rebounded in Saturday’s constest, winning 47-38.

The Kardinals never trailed in the contest.

Mangalus, Kodiak’s leading scorer on the season, was limited to just five points, as Kodiak dropped to 1-3 in the NLC, 3-13 overall.

Alcaide paced the Bears with 11 points, while Ryan Bezona and Max Mutch each added nine.

Kenai improved to 1-5 in the NLC, 5-10 overall.

Kodiak returns home Friday and Saturday to host Soldotna in a pair of NLC games.
