Despite a powerful performance from junior center Leslie Spear, Kodiak fell to Wasilla junior varsity 55-36 in the fourth-place game of the West Valley Ice Jam basketball tournament Saturday in Fairbanks.

Spear went for a game-high 24 points but didn’t get a lot of support as only three other Bears cracked the scoring column. Kodiak dropped to 4-2 on the year.

The Bears earned a trip to the fourth-place game by defeating North Pole 45-26 on Friday.

Again it was Spear who did the damage, pilling up a game-high 18 points. She finished the three-game tournament with 51 points and was Kodiak’s only representative on the all-tournament team. Spear is averaging a team-best 20.3 points per game this season.

Against North Pole, Kodiak jumped out to a 21-11 halftime lead and increased the margin to 30-15 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Avie Arevalo added eight points, which included draining two of Kodiak’s three 3-pointers.

In the final game, Wasilla JV outscored Kodiak 29-13 in the second half to seal the win.

In the championship match, West Valley topped Bartlett 54-38. Thunder Mountain defeated Palmer 40-32 for third.

Kodiak returns to The Rock to host Soldotna in a pair of Northern Lights Conference games Friday and Saturday.
