Black Hills State University sophomore Levi Fried runs ahead of teammates Chris Johnson and Keegan Her Many Horses at a Jan. 21 indoor track and field meet in South Dakota.

It didn’t take Levi Fried long to get his first outdoor track victory of his sophomore season at Black Hills State University.

The 2015 Kodiak High School graduate zoomed to the 800-meter run victory at the season-opening Spring Open on Saturday in Spearfish, South Dakota.

Fried — the school’s indoor record holder in the 600 and 800 — covered the two laps in 1 minute, 56.08 seconds to top the 18-person field.

He added a runner-up finish in the 1,500 with a time of 3:59.45, nearly two seconds back of teammate and Kenai High School graduate Jonah Theisen.
