The Kodiak ESS mix-six volleyball team lost all five of their matches in a season-opening tournament over the weekend in Nikolaevsk.

ESS fell to Tanalian (25-18, 25-11, 25-3), AKP (25-13, 25-15, 24-26, 25-13), Kalskag (25-22, 25-16, 25-20), Nikolaevsk (25-10, 22-25, 25-12, 22-25, 15-6) and Aniak (25-15, 25-13, 29-27).

ESS is a comprised of students from the Kodiak Island Borough School District’s rural schools. Students hail from Akhiok, Karluk and Old Harbor.

The Ravens formed eight years ago and have qualified for the mix-six state tournament three times, placing a program-best fifth at last year’s event.

The year’s squad only has eight players — three were on last year’s historic team.

“We are learning as we go,” ESS coach Phyllis Amodo said last week.
