Five Kodiak youth runners will participate in an invitational race in Anchorage on Saturday.

The race will be held after the Alaska Schools Activities Association’s state championship cross country meets at Kincaid Park. The invitational — not affiliated with ASAA or is a sanctioned school event — is for high school runners who did not qualify for the  state meet.

Kodiak’s Micah Fields, Christian Harver, Naomi Griffin, Kalani Gilbert and Cassidy Foster will be running in the race.

Fields, Harver, Griffing and Gilbert qualified for the state meet, but the Kodiak school district is not allowing athletes to travel because of the rising COVID-19 cases on the island and in Anchorage.

Fields and Harver finished first and second in last week’s Region III Kodiak Championship, while Gilbert, Griffing and Foster were the top three in the girls race.

The invitational race is set for 4:30 p.m.

The state races have a reduced field this season, will not name a team winner, and will include staggered starts. There will be 38 runners in each of the Division I boys and girls races.
