The Kodiak girls swimming and diving team’s quest to regain Region III supremacy took a big blow before Friday’s season-opener against Palmer.

Hours before the meet at the Kodiak Community Swimming Pool, sophomore Devon Cummiskey broke her right tibia, an accident that happened while she was walking at a park, said coach John Lindquist.

“It broke loose right at the growth plate, so it is really serious,” the coach said.

Cummiskey, who will have surgery this week to repair the leg, was one of only four state qualifiers that the girls’ team brought back this season, a year after seeing their reign of eight consecutive Region III Championship titles snapped. Lindquist said he would be surprised to see her come back before the season ends in November.

“It hurts us for regions on the girls' side when you lose points like that,” Lindquist said.

This was just the latest injury to strike the girls squad, as state qualifiers Cameron Bolen and Elianah Michael are also out for the year. Bolen had shoulder surgery, while Michael lost her left arm in an ATV accident in July.

The girls’ team rallied and defeated Palmer both days — 113-91 on Friday and 105-98 on Saturday.

“They rebounded quite well,” Lindquist said. “I scrambled to put together a new lineup for both days and they came through really well.”

Devin’s older sister, Marina Cummiskey, picked up where she left off last season when she claimed the 200-yard freestyle state title. She started her junior year with victories in the 100 butterfly (1 minute, 4.44 seconds), 200 freestyle (2:05.03), 200 individual medley (2:23.85) and 100 butterfly (1:05.03).

Junior Hannah Glover was a double-winner for the Bears on Saturday, taking the 50 freestyle (27.02) and 100 freestyle (1:01.06), while sophomore Molly Blackmon took Friday’s 100 free (1:00.57) and junior transfer Oliva Apitz Friday’s 100 backstroke (1:10.53).

Lindquist was pleased with Apitz’s return to Kodiak waters. She used to be in the Kodiak Kingfishers program before moving to North Carolina, where she swam her first two years of high school.

“I thought she did really well in the backstroke and had a great showing for her first Kodiak meet,” Lindquist said.

The Kodiak boys showed why they are considered favorites to win the program’s first state team title, as they blew past the Moose, winning 152-61 on Friday and 144-73 on Saturday.

Talon Lindquist, last year’s Alaska swimmer of the year, looked in midseason form by winning the 100 backstroke in 51.67, .21 seconds quicker than his 2014 state-winning time. He also won the 200 individual medley (1:59.87), the 50 freestyle (21.73) and the 100 freestyle (48.36).

The coach was also impressed with the Luke and Nathan James. Luke, the junior James, won Friday’s 200 freestyle (1:52.93) and 100 freestyle (51.80), and Saturday’s 200 IM (2:07.21) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.79).

Nathan, the freshman James, posted personal-best times in the 500 freestyle, going 5:23.91 on Friday and 5:26.98 on Saturday.

Senior Dan Lambert was a triple-winner, taking Friday’s 100 butterfly (57.90) and Saturday’s 200 freestyle (1:55.53) and 500 freestyle (5:09.45).

Kodiak also picked up wins from seniors Graham Burnside in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.25), Baxter Anderson in the 100 butterfly (1:00.12) and Gus Hanson in the 100 backstroke (57.26).

“The boys are strong like I thought they would be,” Lindquist said.

Kodiak hosts Region III opponent Soldotna this Friday and Saturday at the Kodiak Community Pool.
