Two Alaska high school football teams will finish their seasons with wins Saturday at the Anchorage Football Stadium.
The Division II and III — the state’s smallest classifications — kick off their state championship games at noon and 4 p.m.
I posted a 5-3 record in the first week of the playoffs, which upped my season total to 70-35.
DIVISION II CHAMPIONSHIP
SOLDOTNA (8-0) VS. LATHROP (5-3)
In the past seven seasons, Soldotna has defeated Eagle River, Palmer twice, Kenai, North Pole, Juneau and Homer in the Division II state championship game. The closest outcome was a 56-49 win over Juneau in 2013.
Up next is Lathrop.
Lathrop has not played in a state championship game since 1985, a 26-10 loss to East Anchorage.
Soldotna topped Lathrop 51-14 in Week 5. I don’t see anything changing this go around ... STARS 56, MALEMUTES 21.
HOUSTON (9-0) VS. BARROW (7-1)
Houston’s football program started in 1997 and on Saturday the Hawks will attempt to capture the program’s first state title.
The Hawks motored into the championship game with a dominating 64-21 victory over defending champion Eielson. In doing so, Houston piled up 420 yards rushing.
Barrow — which punched its ticket to the title game with a 52-0 win over Nikiski — has only lost once this season, a 31-6 defeat to Houston in Week 3.
I like Houston to finish the season undefeated ... HAWKS 45, WHALERS 23.
COLONY (5-4) AT SERVICE (7-2)
Colony lost four of its first five games but turned things around to advance to the semifinals after upsetting East Anchorage last week.
Service (7-2) snapped a two-game losing streak last week ... COUGARS 45, KNIGHTS 28.
SOUTH (5-4) AT WEST (7-2)
West topped South by 10 points two weeks ago ... EAGLES 21, WOLVERINES 14.
