The Kodiak High School baseball team’s unofficial start to the season is Saturday.

The annual blue/gold game begins at 1 p.m. at Baranof Field.

The game is scheduled to go a full nine innings – two innings more than a regulation high school game.

“I got to get some kids on the mound; I don’t want to short change any of them,” second-year Kodiak coach James Arnold said.

Varsity pitchers will be throwing to varsity hitters, while junior varsity hurlers will toss at junior varsity batters.

Kodiak has nine preseason games on the schedule, beginning with a four-game home set April 4-5 against Chugiak.

The team also plays in a tournament April 14-17 in San Diego, Calif., and will finish the preseason schedule with games against Bartlett and Service April 18-19.

“By the beginning of the season, I want things clicking for them so we can run through the opponents and have some good things happen for us,” Arnold said.

Kodiak’s first official game is April 25 at home against Homer, a team coached by former KHS standout pitcher Mark Putney.
