A 19-point first-half deficit was too much for Kodiak to overcome Thursday against Thunder Mountain.

The Bears gave it their best shot, but fell 56-44 in a girls basketball nonconference game in the capital city.

Kodiak, plagued with early turnovers problems, was outscored 17-6 in the opening quarter.

Thunder Mountain, a team that was ranked No. 1 earlier this season, pushed the margin to 27-8 midway through the second quarter.

Kodiak woke up for a bit and headed to the locker room down by 13.

Then, sparked by consecutive buckets by Kristhel Fangonilo, Charmaine Fabricante, Ila Hughes and Kahye Yu, Kodiak trimmed the deficit to 29-24 with 2:30 remaining in the third.

That was as close as the Bears would get the rest of the way.

The Falcons pushed the lead back up to 14 points by the end of the third and were never threatened in the final period.

Hughes paced Kodiak with 13 points, while Stephanie Price tossed in 10.

Thunder Mountain (14-7 overall) had three players score in double figures.

Kodiak coach Krista Hicks said Yu dislocated her shoulder in the second half.

Kodiak (11-7) plays at 7 p.m. today at Juneau-Douglas and finishes its three-game Southeast trip at 6 p.m. Saturday in a rematch with Thunder Mountain.
