Alaska’s high school football playoffs are set and it includes six teams that do not have winning records.
Five of the six teams can be found in the Division I playoff bracket, where eight of the 10 teams in Alaska’s biggest classification advance to the quarterfinals.
That list features one-win Chugiak (1-7), Wasilla (3-5), West Anchorage (4-4), South Anchorage (4-4) and Service (4-4).
West and Wasilla will meet in one quarterfinal, while the three other teams will battle opponents with a combined one loss during the opening weekend that begins Friday.
South will travel to Colony (7-1), Chugiak plays at No. 1 East Anchorage (7-1) and defending champion Bartlett (7-1) hosts Service.
Two of the quarterfinal games will be rematches from the regular season. In Week 1, Colony topped South (27-26) and East throttled Chugiak (47-0).
While eight Division I teams make the playoffs, only four teams each from Division II and III advance to postseason.
In Division II, Soldotna (7-1) plays Palmer (5-2) in a rematch of last year’s state championship game that was won by the Stars (21-0). Soldotna has won the past six Division II state titles.
Upstart Eagle River (5-2) plays Lathrop (6-2) in the other semifinal. Both games will be played at Palmer on Oct. 6.
The Division III semifinals has Ketchikan (6-1) traveling to Eielson (6-1) and Houston (7-1) hosting defending champion Barrow (4-4). The Hawks defeated the Whalers (30-6) in Week 4.
