Redington’s Lexi Seymore takes a shot while being sandwiched by Kodiak’s Ava Pruitt (32) and Leslie Spear (35) during a girls high school basketball game Saturday at Kodiak High School.

Arriving minutes before tip-off, Kodiak’s girls fell behind early to Lathrop and never recovered.

Behind a suffocating defense that produced steal after steal, the Malemutes cruised to a 69-26 basketball victory over the Bears in an opening game of the Dimond Lady Lynx Prep Shootout Tournament Wednesday in Anchorage.

Because of an icy runway at the Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport, Kodiak’s Wednesday morning flight was delayed. The team got off The Rock later in the day and took the hardwood at Dimond High 12 minutes before the start of the 4:30 p.m. game.

The travel delay caused a slow start for Kodiak as Lathrop out of Fairbanks raced out to a 24-8 first-quarter advantage.

The Malemutes continued to run in the second quarter, turning the game into layup practice while building a 54-14 halftime advantage.

Nearly the entire second half was played under a running clock as Kodiak’s losing skid reached eight games. The Bears gave up a season-high 69 points and dropped to 4-9 on the season.

Junior Leslie Spear snapped a three-game string of single-digit scoring outputs to pace the Bears with 16 points. This was the eighth time this season that the 6-foot-2 center has scored in double figures. She is averaging 13.5 points per game.

Senior Ava Pruitt tossed in six points.

Lathrop junior Tristian Martin scored all of her game-high 20 points in the opening half. Freshman teammate TT Tagovailoa and Ella Roberts each added 14 points.

The loss sends Kodiak to the Maroon Bracket, where it will collide with Northern Lights Conference rival Palmer at 2:45 p.m. today. The Moose lost to Bartlett in the opening round.

With 16 teams, the Dimond Lady Lynx Prep Shootout is the largest prep basketball tournament in the state.
