Kodiak’s Joel Valdez picked up a pair of wrestling victories on his first day of competition at the Arctic Winter Games in Fairbanks.

Valdez, a member of Team Alaska, earned a pair of 5-0 wins over wrestlers from Alberta North and Northwest Territories during Monday’s team competition.

Kodiak’s Krystal Fabricante also picked up a 5-0 win against Northwest Territories.

Team Alaska beat Northwest Territories 57-0 and Alberta North 37-18.

Today, Alaska duals Nunavut in the team competition. Individual competition begins Thursday.


Kodiak’s Izzy Riina has helped Team Alaska win its first three matches at the Arctic Winter Games.

On Sunday, Alaska beat Northwest Territories (25-13, 25-18) and Yukon (25-10, 25-14) and on Monday Alaska beat Alberta North (25-13, 25-15).

Team Alaska played late Monday against Nunavut and plays today against Northwest Territories and Yukon.

Pool play ends Thursday and the medal matches are Friday.
