Kodiak sophomore Olivia Troxell proved why she was the No. 1-seed in the Lancer Smith Memorial Wrestling Invitational over the weekend in the Mat-Su Valley.

Troxell emerged as Kodiak’s only champion in the biggest tournament of the season, capturing the 119-pound title in the girls’ tournament.

Troxell pinned her way to the finals, taking down Hutchison’s Paityn Taylor (3 minutes, 6 seconds), Ketchikan’s Ruby McCue (1:51) and North Pole’s Macara Kobernuss (4:44).

In the finals, Troxell needed a tiebreaker to outlast Lathrop’s Autumn Poland 5-4.

Junior Emily Lorring was the runner-up in the 135-pound bracket.

Lorring pinned South’s Victoriah Haakenson (1:00), and beat Soldotna’s Trinity Donovan (9-3) and Lathrop’s Danielle Johnson (8-2) to reach the finals.

In the championship match, Lorring was pinned by Bethel’s Lindsey Beans-Polk (3:32).

Troxell and Lorring accounted for 50 of Kodiak’s 62 points, as the Bears finished seventh in the girls’ tournament.

“Oliva and Emily have been pushing each other for two years now,” Kodiak coach Junior Valladolid said before the tournament.

Kodiak finished 31st in the boys’ varsity tournament with 10 points.

Sawyer Stevens (103 pounds) and Orion Harper (215) each collected two wins. Garritt Roberts, Ivan Rodriguez, Riley Birbilas and Truxton Troxell also competed.

In the boys’ junior varsity tournament, Kodiak placed 30th with 23 points.

Ashley Brandel finished sixth with a 3-3 record in the 215-pound bracket. Ethan Benton won two matches at 119 pounds, while Leo Cossette (130), Richmond Incognito (140) and Jerron Bruce (140) all won a match.

“Everyone wrestled with intensity and perseverance while maintaining the level of class and sportsmanship any coach can ever ask for,” Valladolid wrote on the team’s Facebook page.

This Friday and Saturday, Kodiak hosts Grace Christian, Houston, Valdez and South Anchorage in the 40th Robin Hervey Tournament.
