Kodiak’s Jackson Krug prepares for a race during a high school swimming and diving meet against Homer Saturday at the Kodiak Community Swimming Pool.

The Kodiak High School swimming and diving team celebrated three seniors during their final meet of the season over the weekend at the Kodiak Community Swimming Pool.

Emily Hubert, Ashleigh Nicholson and Bella Penaloza were all honored during Friday’s meet against Homer.

This was one of the smallest graduating classes in recent Kodiak swimming history.

“After graduating groups of 10 or 12 the last couple of years, we became ever more reliant on the leadership that we have,” Kodiak coach Maggie Rocheleau said.

“All of them are going to be missed. They all bring that special something to the team.”

Rocheleau said all three seniors are helping lead this year’s younger squad.

Having come up through the Kodiak Kingfishers swim club, Hubert is the most experienced of the three.

“She is one of those kids who just gets in and works tirelessly,” Rocheleau said.

Rocheleau said Nicholson is always positive during meets and at practices.

“She is one of those kids who always brings a smile and recognizes when her teammates are struggling and lifts the team up,” the coach said.

Penaloza does all her work from the diving board as one of two girls on the diving team.

“She has been somebody who we have been able to count on on the board for years — with such grace,” Rocheleau said.

Kodiak’s boys and Homer’s girls swept the two days of action.

The boys took Friday’s meet 118-27 and won Saturday 98-31, while the girls fell to Homer 80-77 and 83-55 — the team was missing several swimmers on Saturday because of the SAT.

Rocheleau said Homer’s girls have the depth to challenge for a Region III title.

“They are in my mind the ones to catch,” Rocheleau said.

On Friday, Kodiak sophomores Ian Rocheleau and Jackson Krug competed in the final four events — the 200-yard freestyle relay, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.

Rocheleau took the backstroke (1:00.12) and the breaststroke (1:07.15), while Krug was second in both events.

They were back in the usual events on Saturday, with Rocheleau winning the 200 individual medley (2:07.39) and the 500 freestyle (5:03.61) and Krug taking the 100 freestyle (50.95) and the 200 freestyle (1:53.35).

“I wanted to see how they performed after a few hard days of practice and a hard day of competition, and both came out today and had great performances,” Rocheleau said.

Gage Egdorf made his season debut for Kodiak and won Friday’s 200 freestyle (1:51.33) and Saturday’s 100 butterfly (56.45)

“He picked up right where he left off. That was really nice to see,” Rocheleau said.

Alison Narog won four races for Kodiak — the 200 freestyle (2:07.45), 100 butterfly (1:04.39), 50 freestyle (26.14) and the 100 freestyle (58.15).

Nick Carver grabbed wins in the 200 individual medley (2:22.06), the 100 breaststroke (1:06.10).

Leslie Spear won the 50 freestyle (27.06) and the 200 freestyle (2:04.28). Alex Jensen was victorious in the 50 freestyle (25.78) and 100 butterfly (1:04.26), while Hubert won the 500 freestyle (6:11.56) and the 200 IM (2:37.40).

Penaloza and Keith Bruce grabbed the diving titles.

Up next for Kodiak is the Valley Invitational Oct. 18-19.

All the Region III teams will be in attendance.

“It’s a good precursor to regions, which is then two weeks later,” Rocheleau said.
