The Kodiak boys basketball junior varsity team celebrates after winning the ACR Rally in the Valley tournament Saturday at Redington High School. The Bears edged Service 59-51 in the championship game. 

 

The Kodiak boys basketball junior varsity team held off a furious Service rally in the fourth quarter to secure a 59-51 victory and the ACR Rally in the Valley title Saturday at Redington High School. 

Kodiak took a 50-31 lead into the final quarter. Service  made things interesting in the final frame, hitting three 3-pointers and trimming the deficit to single digits. 

Sophomore guard Joren Valdez led the Bears with 19 points, while freshman Connor Case drilled four of his team’s six triples for 13 points. 

Kodiak jumped out to a 21-8 first-quarter advantage and led 35-12 at halftime. 

Isaac Lohman tallied 16 points for Service. 

Kodiak advanced to the title match with a dominating 66-13 victory over host Redington in a semifinal on Friday. 

All eight Kodiak players reached the scoring column, with sophomore John Saliva leading the way with a game-high 15 points. Valdez added 12 points. 

Kodiak led 25-0 after the first eight minutes. 

Valdez, Saliva and freshman John Ticman were named to the all-tournament team. 

Timmy Winegeart, Brandon Dela Cruz, Ethan Kratt and Lyndon Dela Cruz were also on the championship team. 

GIRLS VARSITY

Kodiak dropped its final two games in the Dimond Lady Lynx Prep Shootout Tournament in Anchorage. 

The Bears fell to South Anchorage 63-39 on Friday and Tikiqaq 54-45 on Saturday. 

Kodiak was competitive in the first half of both games, but was outscored 80-37 in the second half. 

Against South, Kodiak trailed 22-17 at halftime. The Wolverines broke the game open with an 18-5 third-quarter advantage. 

Kodiak junior Leslie Spear poured in a game-high 25 points — three points shy of her career high set earlier this season. 

Lilly Weinmann went for 22 points for South. 

On Saturday, the Bears held a commanding 30-14 halftime lead over Tikiqak. 

The Harpooners — the defending 2A state champions — overcame the deficit by draining seven of their eight 3-pointers in the second half to deal Kodiak its 11th straight loss.  

Angela Lane hit three triples to lead Tikiqak with 16 points. Makayla Lane added 13 points. 

Spear led Kodiak with 17 points. Avie Arevalo and Angel Mangrobang each scored eight. 

Kodiak (4-12) hosts Colony in a pair of Northern Lights Conference game Friday and Saturday.  

 

GIRLS JUNIOR VARSITY

The Kodiak girls junior varsity team finished the ACR Rally in the Valley with a 1-1 record.

The Bears lost to North 33-31 on Friday and beat Service 41-19 on Saturday. 

Freshman guard Samantha Thorpe was Kodiak’s offense in both games, netting 14 against North Pole and 19 against Service.
