Kodiak’s boys’ reign atop the Region III podium ended on Saturday.

The Bears’ streak of eight consecutive titles came to an end with a runner-up finish at the Region III Track and Field Championships at Palmer High School.

Kodiak finished with 143 points, nine points behind champion Colony. The Knights had six individual champions to keep the Bears off the podium for the first time since 2005.

Kodiak did have plenty to cheer about over the two-day meet, winning five individual titles and sweeping the relay events.

Junior distance runner Levi Thomet showed no signs of rust after missing a week with a sore shin. He grabbed his second straight 1,600-meter title with a time of 4 minutes, 29.62 seconds and his third consecutive 3,200 title in 9:43.12.

Thomet also joined forces with Billy Alcaide, Andrew Caballa and Levi Fried to win the 1,600 relay and Antony Rubina, Caballa and Fried to capture the 3,200 relay.

Thomet was named the Region III boy athlete of the year.

Thrower Kordell Pillans had a breakout performance. The sophomore won the shot put with a toss of 49 feet, 11.5 inches and the discus with a mark of 128-07.

Pillans shattered his previous-best marks of 42-05.5 in the shot and 114-09 in the discus.

Fried captured his first regional individual title by winning the 800 in 2:02.25, just .20 seconds ahead of runner-up Thomet.

Jay Miranda, Alcaide, Daniel Rodas and Caballa teamed together to win the 400 relay.

Kodiak’s girls finished fifth with 40 points. Colony won with 173 points.

Richelle Walker placed second in the discus and fourth in the shot put, while Ranie Siscar finished third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.08. In the preliminary round, Siscar ran a 16.97 to become only the second Kodiak girl to finish the 100 hurdles under 17 seconds.

Kenai’s Allie Ostrander was named the girls athlete of the year after winning the 800, 1,600 and 3,200.

Kodiak’s Marcus Dunbar was tabbed the boys coach of the year.
