Kodiak’s boys swimming team poses with the Palmer Invitational championship trophy Saturday at Palmer High School.

Coming off a two-week break, the Kodiak boys swimming team did not display any rust at the Palmer Invitational.

The Bears remained undefeated on the season with a dominating victory at the two-day invitational that concluded Saturday at Palmer High School.

Kodiak won five events to tally 106 points — 49 ahead of runner-up Kenai.

The Kodiak girls, despite a small contingent of swimmers, kept rolling and picked up a runner-up finish with 57 points. Palmer won with 91.

The boys swept all three relays — 200-yard medley, and the 200 and 400 freestyles — and picked up individual wins from seniors Nathan James and Anders Hocum.

James trimmed nearly three seconds off his personal-best time to win the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 51.07 seconds. He also finished second in the 100 freestyle.

James was also a part of Kodiak’s winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Hocum remained perfect on the season in the 100 breaststroke, winning with a time 1:03.60. He was also part of Kodiak’s winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Senior Devon Cummiskey and sophomore Leslie Spear each grabbed individual wins for the Kodiak girls.

Cummiskey took the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.47, while Spear won the 200 freestyle with a mark of 2:02.30.

Both Spear and Cummiskey teamed with Emily Hubert and Ashleigh Nicholson to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:57.77.

Kodiak is off this week and returns to the pool for the Region III Championships Oct. 25-27 at Homer High School.

The Kodiak boys have won nine straight regional titles, while the Kodiak girls are the defending champions.
