The Main Elementary gym is the new home of Kodiak High School’s wrestling team.

The team started practice there last week and will be there until the end of the season in February.

The team’s home at Kodiak High School — the school’s mat room — has been demolished as part of the school’s renovations. The new mat room, which will be on the second floor, will be ready by next season.

The team is adjusting to its new digs, which are more spacious than the old practice room that was sandwiched between the high school gym and the weight room.

“It is not a good, healthy situation down there for us,” Kodiak coach Pat Costello said. “But it is the best that we can do. The Main administration is happy to have us there.”

The team moved its mats to Main and spends nearly 20 minutes each practice rolling them out, taping them up and mopping them. When practice is over, the team mops again and rolls the mats out of the way.

“It’s a throwback to the early ’90s where our kids club used to practice,” Costello said.

Not only is Kodiak dealing with new practice facilities, but the team also doesn’t have any home matches.

The high school gym’s floor is being replaced and will not be available until December.

“Without the gym available, that took the opportunity of having early meets away,” Costello said.

Costello said he is trying to schedule a home meet just before Christmas but is facing the difficulty of working around other schools’ schedules.

“Many schools are already locked into their events and some of them don’t have the money,” Costello said. “We do apologize to everybody.”

He is also trying to get several teams to come over for the Robin Hervey Tournament.

Kodiak opens the season Nov. 15 at the Peninsula Duals at Nikiski High School.
