A week after running in the state championship cross country meet members of Kodiak’s cross country team are headed to Oregon.

Seven runners are competing at Saturday’s Concordia/Puma Cross Country Classic at Fernhill Park in Portland, Ore.

Representing the girls are Jaymi Bethea and Allie Smith.

Bethea won the 4A girls state title two weeks ago in Anchorage. Last year, she finished 18th at the Concorida meet. Smith finished 47th.

Nathan Deer, Cole Christiansen, Jordan Fogle, Jake Salus and Caleb Nymeyer are representing the boys.

Salus finished 118th, while Fogle was 155th at last year’s meet.

Port Lions’ Katie Strong is also attending the meet. She placed third at the 1/2/3A state championships.

Strong and all of Kodiak’s runners are running in the elite varsity races. The girls race at 2 p.m. Alaska time, while the boys race at 2:30 p.m.

Service, South Anchorage, West Valley and Lathrop are also running in the elite varsity race that consists of 29 teams from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.

College

University of Portland cross country runner Trevor Dunbar, a 2009 KHS grad, is competing at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday at 6:30 a.m. Alaska time.

The race can be seen online at www.flotrack.org.

The University of Portland is the eighth-ranked team in the NCAA.
