In his return to wrestling after a two-year absence, Kodiak senior Truxton Troxell reached the semifinals of the Houston Altercation over the weekend at Houston High School.

Troxell was the Bears’ only grappler to advance to the semifinals in the team’s season-opening tournament.

Troxell, who took two years off after qualifying for state as a freshman, lost his semifinal match to Colony’s Macarius Floresta and finished 2-2 in the 215-pound bracket.

“He is a horse and is stronger than he used to be,” Kodiak coach Junior Valladolid said last week. “He has learned how to use his weight and harness his strength — I’m really excited about him.”

To get into wrestling shape, Valladolid said Troxell has shed 45 pounds and is still looking to drop weight.

“He feels better, looks healthier and his attitude is more positive,” the coach said.

Lance Charliaga and Riley Birbilas also went 2-2 for Kodiak. Sawyer Stevens, Orion Harper and Dylan Zurflueh picked up one win each for the Bears.

Kodiak’s 10 wrestlers combined for a 9-21 record and placed 13th with 22 points.

South Anchorage cruised to the team title with 212 points, while Wasilla as second with 138 points.

This Friday and Saturday, Kodiak travels to Valdez for the Throwdown in Snowtown.
