Kodiak’s Naomi Griffin runs in a time trial on Sept. 5 at Bear Valley Golf Course.

The Kodiak High School cross country team continued its run of intrasquad meets over the weekend.

The Bears hit Pillar Mountain on Friday for a 2.2-mile race. Christian Harver was the top boy, finishing in 18 minutes, 33 seconds — six ticks faster than Elias Litzow. Naomi Griffin was the quickest girl up the mountain, clocking a time of 23:30.

Less than 24 hours later, Kodiak competed in a 4xmile relay at the Kodiak Island Raceway. Micah Fields turned the fastest boys’ leg in 5:31, while Cassidy Foster topped the girls field in 7:17.

This Saturday, Kodiak will be honoring its seniors at Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park. The race begins at 10 a.m.

Kodiak is limited to intrasquad meets   because the school district has banned travel and on-island competition through September.

FAST TIME

Anchorage Christian School senior Tristian Merchant did something Kodiak’s Trevor Dunbar and Levi Thomet never did — turn a 14 minute, 45.2 second 5-kilometer time in a cross country race.

Marcus Dunbar, a longtime Kodiak coach and keeper of all running records, told the Anchorage Daily News that Merchant’s time is believed to be the quickest every turned by an Alaskan.

“Tristian’s time should be the fastest,” Dunbar told the ADN.

Merchant recorded his time at the ACS Invitational, a two-lap loop around Cheney Lake in Anchorage.

Trevor Dunbar and Thomet both produced sub-15:00 times at meets in Portland, Oregon.

According to athletic.net, Merchant’s time is the second-fastest in the nation this season. Parker Wolfe of Cherry Creek, Colorado, turned a 14:30.1, a day after Merchant logged his time.

As a sophomore, Merchant ran 16:20.9 in Kodiak, which ranked him ninth all-time at Fort Abercrombie. Trevor Dunbar (15:20) and Thomet (15:23) hold the top two times.
