Kodiak snapped a season-opening four-game losing streak with a come-from-behind win on Friday at Soldotna.

Down 1-0 and without a hit through four innings, the Bears broke through late for a 4-1 Northern Lights Conference softball win.

Kodiak took the lead with three runs in the fifth, all coming with two outs.

Sydney Hosier broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single and scored two outs later on a Dannika Catt triple. Catt scored on the play when the outfielder misplayed the ball.

Kaitlyn Clark followed with a single to left and she scored on a Celeste Chichenoff double to left that gave Kodiak a 3-1 lead.

“We were a little nervous after the fourth,” Kodiak coach Sam Catt said. “The bats came alive and the girls became aggressive on the bases.”

The Bears added a run in the sixth when Kassidy Ellison scored on a passed ball.

Kaia Yatsik earned the complete-game win. The senior scattered 10 hits, struck out five and walked one.

Kodiak dropped Saturday’s game against Soldotna, 5-4.

The Stars plated three in the fifth to take the lead for good.

The weekend split left Kodiak with a 1-1 NLC record, 1-5 overall, while the Stars improved to 2-1 in the NLC.

“It was nice to get the one win. It would have been realy nice to come out 2-0,” Catt said.

Kodiak scored first with a Chichenoff single that brought in Catt. Soldotna took the lead with two runs in the second.

The Bears tied the game with a run-scoring single from Ellison in the fourth and grabbed a 4-2 lead in the fifth when Chichenoff and Clark scored on passed balls.

Ellison, Clark and Chichenoff all had two hits.

“They were both close games — hard fought games on both sides,” Catt said. “We just fell short the last game.”

On Friday and Saturday, Kodiak hosts Kenai and Skyview in Northern Lights Conference games.

These games will begin a stretch of three straight home weekends for Kodiak.
