Kodiak High School's softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the small-school state championships Friday at Cartee Fields in Anchorage.

Kodiak lost its first game to Ketchikan, 9-1, then stayed alive with a 10-0 win over Hutchison.

The Bears play Northern Lights Conference rival Homer in a loser-out game at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The winner advances to play the Ketchikan/Juneau loser in the consolation bracket final.
