JUNEAU (AP) — Alaska Senate President Gary Stevens is now among leadership for The Council of State Governments.

Stevens will act as chairman-elect of the organization this year, and serve as chairman in 2013.

The Council of State Governments, in a release, says it "fosters the exchange of insights and ideas to help state officials shape public policy."

The group's executive director and chief executive, David Adkins, said Stevens' willingness to work across party lines and create what he called lasting solutions to difficult problems make him well positioned to serve as the organization's next chairman.

Stevens, a Republican from Kodiak, leads a bipartisan majority coalition in the Senate.
