The Kodiak Kingfishers swim team is hosting its first invitational in the John Lindquist era Friday and Saturday at the Kodiak Community Swimming Pool.

Kodiak’s swim club faces swimmers from Homer and the Northern Lights Swim Club in the 2012 Bringing in the New Year Kodiak Kingfishers Invitational.

Friday’s meet begins at 5 p.m., while Saturday’s starts at 9:15 a.m.

“We have never had a facility to have anybody come to our pool,” said Lindquist, KKF coach. “We are trying to sell it as a great meet for new mid-level swimmers who haven’t traveled before.”

Lindquist said KKF tried to host a meet last year, but didn’t have any takers. This year was different.

Homer is sending 10 swimmers, while Northern Lights, based out of Anchorage, is sending six swimmers to compete with Kodiak’s 133 swimmers.

“We are starting small, but we are hoping it will build,” Lindquist said.

In Lindquist’s early years as coach, KKF competed in postal meets, where they would swim at the same time as another team in a different location and then send times to each other through the postal service.

After results were gathered, a trophy was awarded.

That soon turned into time trials, which KKF still does. But with the addition of the Kodiak Community Pool two years ago, the KKF board wanted to do something else.

“We decided we needed to do an invitational,” Lindquist said.

He said KKF plans to have an invite every year at this time.
