With rain coming down and fog surrounding Kodiak Wednesday, Sam Catt gave his softball team the day off from practice.

He figured the players could use the rest in preparation for this weekend’s slate of Northern Lights Conference games against Kenai and Skyview.

The Bears host both Peninsula squads in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.

Friday starts with a 2 p.m. game against Skyview and ends with a 6 p.m. outing vs. Kenai.

Kodiak opens Saturday at noon against Skyview and concludes at 4 p.m. against Kenai.

When the final out is made, Kodiak will have played 50 percent of its conference games in a two-day span, something Catt said he is not fond of. He added that this was the only available slot in both Homer’s and Skyview’s schedule.

“We got to make sure we play to the best of our abilities and make sure we go 4-0,” he said.

Kodiak enters its first of three homestands with a 1-1 NLC record, 1-5 overall. The Bears are coming off a two-game split at Soldotna.

Catt said Skyview will offer a challenge. The Panthers, in their last year, are 2-3 on the season, which includes the program’s first-ever victory over Homer.

“Skyview seems to be much improved,” Catt said. “They are having a heck of a season so far. I am really concerned with them.”

Kenai is winless on the season at 0-2 in the NLC, 0-4 overall. In their last game, the Kardinals lost to Homer, 17-0.

Kodiak follows this four-game home set with two more weekends at home against Service (May 16-17) and Homer (May 23-24).

“Even the girls are excited to play some home games and I am excited mainly for the fact that we don’t have to travel,” Catt said.
