After beginning its four-game road trip with a pair of victories, Kodiak limped back to the island with two straight losses.

Soldotna’s Shane Miller completed a Stars doubleheader sweep of Kodiak with a game-winning home run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 14-13 Southcentral Conference baseball win Saturday in Soldotna.

In the earlier game, Soldotna’s Max Hegge struck out nine in a complete-game 7-0 win.

On Friday, Kodiak edged Palmer 2-1.

The 2-2 road trip puts Kodiak in last place in the South Division at 2-3, behind Soldotna (4-0), Kenai (1-0) and Homer (2-1).

“It hurts us in the standings, but I’m not too worried,” Kodiak coach Rick Langfitt said. “The champion is determined by the tournament and we learned a lot of stuff.”

The highlight of the weekend was when Alec Eastman and Austin Frick combined to one-hit Palmer in a 2-1 victory. The Bears scored solo runs in the fourth and seventh.

“Alec pitched really well. He was the star,” Langfitt said.

Eastman didn’t allow a hit in his five innings of work.

At Soldotna, Hegge, a former Kodiak Little Leaguer, stymied the Bears’ bats with his complete-game effort.

In the nightcap, Kodiak led 12-3, before Soldotna scored seven in the sixth on four errors and tied it in the seventh on a wild pitch.

One inning later, Miller ended the game with a shot over the center field fence.

“I think we played really well at the beginning of the trip,” Langfitt said. “We had one bad inning in the second game against Soldotna.”

On Friday and Saturday, Kodiak hosts Homer.
