All three Kodiak High School athletes who participated in the 23rd Arctic Winter Games returned from Fairbanks with medals.

Kyrstal Fabricante and Joel Valdez both claimed gold medals in wrestling, while Izzy Riina was part of Team Alaska’s bronze medal volleyball team.

Fabricante, a freshman, beat Alberta North’s Moican Ziegler, 11-0, to claim the gold medal in the 52-kilogram junior female division.

Valdez, a junior, defeated Alberta North’s Jordan Grey, 10-0, to take first in the 52-kilogram junior male division.

Both Fabricante and Valdez wrestled in two-person round-robin brackets.

Team Alaska wrestling also won the team competition over Alberta North and Northwest Territories.

The Team Alaska volleyball squad beat Northwest Territories in the bronze-medal match, 25-10, 25-9, 25-9.

Alaska went 6-4 during round-robin play that qualified the team for the playoff round. Alberta North defeated Alaska 25-15, 25-12, 25-13 in the playoff and went on to win the gold medal with a five-set victory over Yamal.

The Arctic Winter Games, a circumpolar competition for northern and arctic athletes, concluded Saturday.
