“It has come to our attention that members of our community are being called by scammers misrepresenting themselves as KEA staff in attempts to collect personal information and illegitimate payments,” KEA said in a statement posted to its blog.
KEA added that it never contracts out its bill collections. “There are circumstances when KEA may want to reach you and verify information, but these billing calls would come from your locally-owned Cooperative’s Member Services team,” it said. “These are Kodiak residents that you know. If you receive an incoming call from anyone claiming to represent KEA and asking for personal information or payment, hang up and call KEA back directly at 486-7701. That way you know exactly who are talking to.
KEA also offered tips that can help Kodiak residents avoid identity theft or other phone scams, here are steps you can take to protect yourself:
• Always verify with whom you are doing business before revealing personal information.
• If conducting business over the phone, make sure to initiate the call to that business.
• Be wary of any e-mail with “urgent” requests to validate or verify personal information.
• Do not fill out any forms that come to you in an email that request personal information, unless you definitely know and trust the source.
