Tommy Johnson signed up for the Annual City Championship Bowling Tournament to work on his game.

“I just entered to get practice on my splits and seven pins that I leave,” he said.

As it turned out, he didn’t leave many splits or seven pins in the three-week tournament that finished Sunday at Tropic Lanes.

That’s because he was filling his scoresheet with Xs.

Johnson claimed the Division I all-events scratch title with a total pinfall of 2,170.

The lefthander recorded an 803 in singles, a 695 in doubles and a 672 in the team event to slip past runner-up Jeff Kiefer by 15 pins.

The 800-series — the first of Johnson’s 10-year career — sealed his first scratch title in the annual February tournament.

“I didn’t think I was going to shoot that high,” Johnson said. “I especially wasn’t expecting to shoot an 800.

“It was a rush. It would have been nice to have a 300, but I was close in the last game.”

Johnson’s three-game singles series went 257, 267 and 279, which earned him the Division I singles title to go along with his all-events handicap crown.

Johnson said he wasn’t even going to bowl the shift where he knocked down his 803 — only 97 pins away from a perfect 900 series.

“I was hungry and was going to leave,” he said. “Then I was like, ‘I am here, I might as well tough it out.”’

Johnson’s third game was a near-300, as he rolled 11 strikes. His only spare came in the ninth frame.

Johnson doesn’t consider himself one of Kodiak’s top bowlers, but it’s hard to leave his name off the list after his performance in the tournament.

“When you hear of top bowlers, it’s people like Philip (Obas), the Kiefers and the Olson brothers. I guess I am the sleeper,” said Johnson, a 1998 Kodiak High School graduate.

Johnson started with a 168 average in 2001. Now, after three career 300 games, he is hovering above a 200 average.

“I would just throw the ball and rely on power,” Johnson said of his game when he started. “Now, I am trying to work more on finesse and trying to make a mark.”

He downplays the myth that southpaws have an easier time than righthanders.

“There are only a few of us, so people think we have an advantage, but not every time, because we struggle, too.

“Sometimes we have to work harder, because (the lane) doesn’t dry out and it is still oily.”

It’s not just all about the competition for Johnson.

“Everybody encourages you and cheers you on when you are doing good,” he said. “They tell you to shake it off when you throw a bad shot.”

Other Division I tournament winners included Manny Narra and Rod Kiefer in doubles and Stefan Macahilas, Jeff Kiefer, Dan Kiefer and Matt Kiefer in the team event.

Division II winners were Jimmy Wilson for all-events scratch, Daily Mirror sports reporter Derek Clarkston for all-events handicap, Ruth Barton for singles, Manny Narra and Randy Bishop for doubles, and Bill Hentges, Bryttni Juhlin, Rob Juhlin and Ruth Hentges for the team event.
